I'd think that two or three threads each side would be plenty. Also long as th QR is locked down, the wheel isn't going anywhere. Only way I can see a problem is if the QR skewer suddenly breaks while riding, which I've never heard of happening. Of course one can ride off without remembering to lock down the QR, but then the chain will pull the wheel forward into the downtube anyway.

I suspect the rear hub is originally a 120 that was overhauled and cheaply spaced out to 126 before the wheels were rebuilt without changing the 5 speed axle because the axle only portrudes about 2 or three threads out of each end of the hubs. I don't know if these were ridden this way or if this was a throw together for the auction (the freewheel was just spun on with no grease and didn"t suit the NR derailleur). The question is; HOW DEEP DOES THE END OF THE AXLE HAVE TO GO INTO THE DROPOUT THE BE SAFE TO RIDE? I know that the QR puts the whole thing in "compression", but if I keep and ride these wheels do I have to order a 6 speed axle and rebuild this hub first?...thanks from Patrick Lay in Chicago
