This is a first generation Record BB with separate bearing races pressed on the axle.

Joe,

Looking at the pics in the auction, it sure doesn't look like the bearing races are pressed onto the axle. It does seem clear that the dust shield flanges are pressed on, but I think the axles with the pressed on races were the type that came out a little later and took 3/16" bearings. They were marked "per sfere 3/16" or something like that. There was an obvious, square shoulder at the outboard edge of the race, whereas the race in the auction makes a smooth transition to the main portion of the axle. I think these old BBs with the flanges are quite rare, a good bit less common (and more sought after) than the 3/16" type, which is itself pretty rare

Given the rarity of the 1st gen cotterless BB, and considering that I frequently see NOS 1980's NR BBs selling around $100, it might be just as apt a question if Bruce had asked why the flanged BB only fetched $225. My guess is that it could have done better if there were pics showing the actual condition. With the auction as it was, folks were bidding on a BB that might have had worn cups, irrespective of what the seller might have said.
