Doland: I think your set up looks fine and pretty clever.

On your picture site you wrote: "I'd prefer not to use a clamp on cage since I want to keep the original paint."

For the past 5 or so years I've had two cages mounted on my '72 International (champagne) using the Zefal plastic clamp band, bought at a LBS. I found this arrangement to be quite good. I just removed them last week with no paint damage evident. (Aside: I haven't put a bottle in those cages in a year now: using a CamelBak, and I won't be going back to bottles.)

Is a water bottlecage behind the seat really that bad? You be the judge!

I think it looks stupid, but it wasn't half bad from a functional standpoint when I tried it out in the driveway. I'd use handlebar bottle mounts, but I don't want to cover up my lovely GB "Map of England" Randonneur bars.
