For decades, CCM sold Road Racers, path bikes with optional mudguards and fixed/free hubs. Scary thing is they almost always came equipped with the rear stay, clamp-on Philco/Philips centre pulls...AKA boat anchors. Imagine these brakes on a freewheeling bike with chrome steel rims. Maybe brake pads were soft and magical back ye olden days.

And mudguards likely make "gloving" the wheel quite interesting. Ouch!
