The basic Shimano UG tool seems pretty well made and works fine on my vintage kit, and I have a Ritchey portable multitool with a rivet press tha t is also nicely made, albeit rather unergonomic in use. The Ritchey (mightn' t be made any longer- I got it circa 10 years ago) is just the thing for taking along on a ride. I have an old Cyclo Rivoli from the '70s too, it looks cheesy, but is still functional despite a lot of use over the years.
I've always wanted a VAR pliers-type tool, but I can't justify the expense
