So true. And didn't the classics seem to bring out the best in them? Moser going flat out over the cobbles in "A Sunday in Hell" was a study in power, grace and control, not to mention a hell of a lot of grit and determination.

Though out of our period, I'd like to add another seemingly supersonic rider to that list: Andrea Tafi. When I saw footage of him blasting his way to victory in the '99 Paris-Roubaix I was reminded of his older countryman Moser. And to do it in the Italian Champ's Jersey!

For those who can stand looking at a photo from '99 here is a classic, all-action, hard-man rider if ever I saw one:
