I've inhibited rust on visible chrome with a light coat of clear spray lacquer. Very clear at first, yellows a bit over time, but seals out elements pretty well.

Weigle's will keep rust off well--one of my all-time favorite products. But for visible chrome you may not want a sticky waxy brown coating.
