One of the best online sites I have found for race related statistics is: http://www.memoire-du-cyclisme.net The information is reasonably up to date and contains surprisingly few historical content errors. I have this site bookmarked at the top of my links list in Internet Explorer.

On the analog side of life, another excellent source of information is the three volume "Encyclopedie" by Pascal Sergent. This set of books is published by Eecloonaar out of Belgium. It is current through 2000.

Personally, I use the "Encyclopidie" so much that I ended up buying four sets: One for use at my office downtown, one for use upstairs at the house and another to use where the majority of the collection resides. I have one other set sitting in its original shipping box waiting to be used onceone of the other sets falls apart.

Finally, if you want really anal information, like knowing who was 3rd place at Marke-leper-Marke on May 17, 1959 (it was Julien Heirnaert), the annual "Velo" books are a great reference. The current incarnation started in 1956 and has been issued once per year ever since. Every few years the publishers release a "Velo Plus" that is an addendum to the regular years that offers up additional race details.

I was looking at the listing of polka-dot winners jerseys on the Torelli web sute, which lists Virenque in 3rd place with 5 jerseys. I guess Chairman Bill needs to update it. I guess one needs to use online data with caution. I found another site that liste Anquetil as only a 4-time winner of the TdF. <snip>
