My experience is the same as Dave's. I bought a bike 5 years ago and on the first ride while going downhill I flatted. The tube deflated instantly, a nd if I was in a corner I would have crashed. Whould you want to risk your vintage steed to a crash where you could damage the paint? I do not know ho w old the latex tubes are or whether they might have deteriorated due to co ntamination from pump oil but the risk for me is not tolerable. I doubt the y make much difference anyway. One thing that truely ruins a bike's ride is Mister Tuffies. They make a Paramount ride like a Huffy. Brian Blum in B erkeley

I've had OK luck with latex tubes and I believe that they do make for a better ride, there is a significant disadvantage that I've found.

Firstly all my wheel sets are from pre 1984.

Its important to coat the latex tube and inside of the tire with talc to provide a dry lubricant. You might even try stretching the tire a little.

The main problem that I've had with latex tubes is that when they flat, it can be a rapid and potential catastrophic deflation. You'll find yourself riding on the rim in seconds, struggling for control. Seems butyl is more forgiving with theres a puncture.
