I guess folks here haven't heard of that staple in the Brooks catalogue fo r years and years (although I don't think it is anymore): the Brooks "undershield" which was a stiff leathercloth and later plastic shield that

fit under the saddle and prevented spray and road guck from soaking where it really counts: the unfinished underbelly of a saddle. Keeping rain of f the top of the saddle: well the rider did that (!) and a plastic bag would

suffice when off the machine. Another nice way to protect the underside of a saddle, as I demonstrated too definatively during Dan Artley's recent sodden summer ride, is carrying a spare tubular snug under the saddle in the back. Worked like a charm. My nice Woolistic white socks turned bl ack from sodden Detto Pietro shoes but that's another issue.
