Great info Kurt!

So according to the web site: Province corresponds to US counties (Region corresponds to US states) and province abbreviations (not codes) are two letters (regions are three letter abbreviations).

So the letter(s) stamped on Italian made Masi are either a two letter province abbreviation (AV, GR)or a single letter city name abbreviation (M, V, B, A, P).

Looking at the province chart on the web site "AV" would correspond to the province (county) and city of Avellino, which is in the region of Campania (located down in the ankle of the boot) a very long way from Milano! Anyone have a guess who as to what subcontrator lived there?

As to Jack Gabus' question: "WOULD "A" STAND FOR ALBERTO? My code on my 73 Twin Plate is MA 57...What da ya think?"

I would tend to agree, although the question would remain, "Alberto built or subcontrated to someone else?" Stefan Schaefter's SPEEDBICYCLES web site http://www.speedbicycles.ch has a '74, '76, and a '77 Masi GC with Alberto pantographing and signature on top tube. Twenty photos of the '74, 47 photos of the '76, and 32 photos of the '77 (fabulous photos on this web site by the way!).

All of the above, conjecture of course.
