When I was part owner of Eisentraut Bicycles Inc. in 1974 we did allen key brake centerbolts. We would cut down the long bolts and rethread them 1/4 x 28 thread. And then we would turn a shoulder on an "Allen Nut". We used 1/4 threads because there were no metric allen nuts that we could find. I don't claim to have invented the idea - I think I saw them on some kind of custom frame first - don't know who the builder was. Bruce Gordon http://www.bgcycles.com

I Remember in August of 1976 visiting my cousin who was at that time an owner of Raincross Cyclery in Riverside, Ca. It was my first chance to show him a bike that I had built after coming back from England in 1975. He asked if I could do allen key brake fitting bolts. I had never seen them before so I asked him where he got the idea. To show me, he had me meet a California racer who rode a Confente. That was my first acquaintance with the concept. Of course I have no idea if Mario copied this from somewhere else like Italy or someone else Peter Johnson or if it was original.
By the way, that racer was a well known name at the time but I have forgotten who is was.
