A couple of years ago I purchased a beautiful Rickert bike at T-town. It was all decked out in campy and was pretty clean overall. The one thing that bothered me is that it had a clamp on water bottle cage right over the paint and decal. I really thought it would be shot but bought the bike from an old timer anyway. I told him that the finish under the cage clamp would probably be ruined since the bike was from the 70s. He responded that it should not be as he first wrapped the painted tube with 3 to 4 layers of plumbers teflon pipe thread tape. When I got home I carefully removed the clamps and then the tape and he was correct. You could not even see where it had been. He explained that he used this on all his bikes because it was easy, clean, cheap and you could easily peel away the excess to where it could not be seen. Well I now do that on any clamp on part that touches painted surfaces.
