Doug,

I'm sorry if I offended for it was not my intent. I was not referring to private transactions carried on between consenting parties outside of eBay.

But if you choose to be an eBay seller, I think it is incumbent on you, just as in a bricks and mortar establishment, to make it as easy as possible on your potential customer. For one, there are too many others who provide the simple click-and-pay option, whatever you may think of it. To not do so costs you potential customers. Also, as a seller you are seeking my custom, not the other way round.

It is your privilege to eschew eBay and even heap scorn on the place and its methods. But for some of us, eBay with all its flaws is an invaluable source for our hard-to-source hobby items (and not just bikes). I've had over 400 eBay transactions and I've never been stiffed. And I can count the real disappointments on one hand.

Fred also makes a valid point when he talks about high dollar (or quid) transactions, like the one that started this discussion. Putting a ten-spot and the mail and losing it is one thing. Buying a Masi GC for north of $3k is quite another.

So I stick by my guns. On eBay, unless I have either previous dealings to rely on or the seller is vouched for by a third party I know to be trustworthy, it's PayPal or no go. Outside of eBay is a different matter.

Just my 2p.
