Here are a couple of possible sources for Malvern Star Five Star decals:

Our own Eddie Albert: ealbert@bellatlantic.net Greg Softley: gtsoftley@ozemail.com.au (Greg's mom used to work for Bruce Small, Malvern Star's owner during their heyday)

Also, for the lowdown on Five Stars don't miss Rolf Lunsmann's contributions to the Canberra Bicycle Museum website:

Ralph has also done a nice printed treatise on Malvern Star, including a seciton on painting. Ask him for a copy.

Mike Barry at Bicycle Specialties in Toronto has done at least one Five Star restoration, so he may have another source (though it might have been Eddie).

Regarding rear-facing fork ends... of the dozen or so Aussie-made bikes I own (1920s - 1960s), only two have forward-facing dropouts. All but one of my "track" frames have obvious rear brake bridges. I've seen these "track" frames with rear derailers on bolt-on hangers, single freewheels, fixed and with internally-geared hubs. I think it's fair to say that these bikes were not all made for track riding. I have the impression that, in building for the home market, most of the Aussie makers focused on sturdy, uncomplicated designs - at least until well into the 1960s.

I say track bike, but it seems to have a rather pronounced brake bridge even though it has track drop outs. Stumps me! I'm sure that with the tremendous level of expertise out there someone can enlighten me...some form of racing bike other than track?Any paint suggestions? The bike has been stripped and bead blasted. I am thinking of making all the stars on the head tube different colors... blasphemous? If you get the idea that I am out of my area of expertise a bit here, you sure are correct! Any suggestions on components that are actually possible to find? Pics available if you are interested...eventually I'll post some on the Wool Jersey site when I get my feet a bit more on the ground on this project. The bike is a bit large for me as a fixed gear, so I am not quite sure what I will do. It was just so darn beautiful I could not resist...I guess I'm a pushover!"
