Not half as funny as some of the things that nontechnical types come up with.
Obviously, crank dust caps were never specifically designed for this purpose, but it seems pretty clear that they serve it anyway. Yes, lots of us have had problems with loosening crank bolts, and Brandt is the only guy so far who has given a credible explanation of what's happening.
