I have a few of them also. I would assume that it is for a 28" American (same as 700c) wheel.

I have a Veeder mileometer with trip meter, made in Hartford USA, to a patent dated October 22nd 1895, which I am thinking of fitting to one of my bikes. Does anyone know what size wheel this is intended to be used with? It is stamped M288 - does that indicate a 28" wheel? It is a beautiful little instrument, which fits on the end of the front axle in the same way that British made Lucas ones did, and is moved by a striker fixed to one of the spokes.
