I don't think Masi is an example of your point Harvey.
My understanding is that Faliero Masi used the twin plate design for a couple of years in the early 1970s as a way of making his frames (Gran Criterium) different than that of the rest of the Italian builders. It was supposed to be a style thing. From what I've heard he discontinued the twin plate because it made for too much additional work to construct a fork.
