Before 5-speed freewheels came along, 4 1/2 inches (114 mm) was pretty common. This is what's seen on most Sturmey-Archer hubs.
A 10 mm axle is unlikely to fit. Older British stuff commonly used flatted axles, 5/16" across the flats (about 8 mm.) The actual axle diameter was generally 3/8" (9.5 mm.)
