As soon as you mentioned the Herne Hill Champions meet I looked in my Fathers old books and found this. Champion of Champions by Jim Wallace, 1950 Syd Patterson from Australia turned up two stones overweight won the final beating Jackie Heid of the USA , J.Bellenger of France was third. This must have been the meeting you were at. Sure my Dad said that BSA use to sponsor cups at this meet. Think the trophy's were called Gold Column and Gold Vase. Brilliant bit of marketing same names as their racing bikes.
