Subject: [CR]Unusual Stronglight 49 cranks

Currently on eBay is an unusual Stronglight 49D. I have one almost like it, and I thought mine was unique. Steve Willis and I were wondering the other day how it came to be.

What's odd to me is the single TA style road width (3/32) chainring, with no provision for attaching inner rings. I thought the model 49 was a two ring crank from the start. Was it common to convert these to single chainring set ups? Was there a particular event or style or riding that worked better with a single ring? Perhaps a super light road rig? The arms are 175mm, so I can't see it as a track item, and there's no chain guards so I'm doubtful of a cyclo cross application. It's only 48 tooth, so not a real good time trial set up. Anyone care to guess the how or why of this crank? FYI, mine has a 52 tooth ring.
