I actually felt a kind of "personal attachment" with picture #6 in Richard's album. This is the cover from a March, 1934 issue of the New Yorker but it depicts an experience that my wife and I continually encountered white bicycling in Egypt during 1984.
Perhaps others of you out there have had the same experience
while cycing in Third World countries. That is, in many
places, the site of an American or European riding through town
on a bicycle will draw dozens and dozens of people to the
roadside and many of them will be requesting (some might say
demanding) "charitable contributions".
