Subject: [CR]question about English bikes

Two English bikes that I have each have rear facing tabs--rectangular, almost square, pieces either brazed on or an original part of the casting for the rear drop-out. These tabs appear as if something would fit over the m or the piece would have an opening equal to the tab, perhaps some type of wheel holder or spacer. It would appear that whatever fits over these tabs would then have arms going on either side of drop-out. The two bikes that have this add-on are Engish track, cycle path racer bikes. They have rear facing, track style rear drop-outs.

Does anyone know or could anyone direct me to a site that would show me wha t the piece would look like that fits over these tabs? Or perhaps, it is another decorative touch, but it sure looks as if it is designed for a utilarian purpose.

Thanks.

Cheers.
