I think there was a good discussion of this in the archives. I recall just reading about this. I'll have to find it and link the search and or posts....

I think the gist of it was that the CPSC instituted a bunch of rules, then got sued by someone in the bike industry, and had to pull back. They were more general mandates about no sharp edges less than a certain radius, etc. This lead to the front deraileur lips, corresponding changes in the BB axle length, possibly the curved wheel QR's, plastic covers on the wheel guides, etc.

My experience leads me to further believe that Campy was probably retooling at the time, so they instituted the changes expecting them to be necessary, which later proved to not be absolutely required. Since they had already retooled, and tended to keep practicing stepwise refinement, they just left things alone after 76/77.

I was just posting Ray privately about this, when I realized that I've forgotten what exactly it was the precipitated the CPSC regs that caused Campagnolo (and all of us) so much grief. Were those regs aimed specifically at Campagnolo? If so, why? If not, why did they affect Campagnolo so severely? I never noticed that Shimano or Suntour made any special changes in the wake of those regs..for instance.
