Some thoughts on bike stands for Velo Rendezvous...

This year the Sunday bike show is at Allendale Park (not the Rose Bowl):

Lots and lots of grass and trees, and the access is very easy. There will probably be in excess of 125 bikes on the lawns and I'm thinking probably the best bike stand to use would be the style that Peter Johnson came up with for the past Velo Rendezvous events:

You drive a stake into the grass and then lash the rear of the rear wheel to the stake with a toe strap or twine. Peter makes his own stakes of course.

After I mentioned to Rich Pinder how these stands made from stakes worked he went to his local OSH and found they sold steel garden stakes (3' long steel tube painted green) that are design to be driven into the ground with a hammer for $3.00 each. One end is formed into a chiseled shape and the other is crimped together for driving with a hammer.

I also found some 3 foot green plastic covered 1/4" steel rod garden stakes for around $1.25 that would work too (these blend into the background better, but are not as sturdy as the above mentioned steel tube of course).

The advantage of the stake over a bike stand is that the stake eliminates the possibility of your perfect original Peugeot UO8 tipping over against your neighbor's perfect original Confente!

I bought about fifteen of each style stake if any of you want to try one. Or go to your local OSH and buy your own. Let me know if you want one of mine before hand please.
