I always pull ouward on the clamp ears WITHOUT pushing on the logo portion with my thumbs, and I don't "spare the paint" by pulling outward any more than necessary.

It might seem contrary to theory, but this seems to distribute the flex and stress more evenly along the band, even with the diamond shape around the logo on Campy's levers.
