Subject: Xport to [CR]4th? Annual Retro Ride in Baltimore County

Thanks to Dan A. for posting this, and to Shawn Downing for leading the ride. I will drive the van up to the ride, from McLean Va. Depending on how many Sanfords ride with me, I may have another space or two. Just as soon have 4 in the truck as just 2.

I can bring my shoemaker's last again if anyone going to the ride needs cleats attached; please contact me in advance. I haven't yet decided what I'm going to ride, but it will have a low gear <50" I learned about that riding that route one year with a near corn-cob FW on the Cinelli.

Just a reminder that there's a vintage ride leaving from Oregon Ridge Lodge this coming Saturday north of Baltimore. Not my organization, but a really nice ride. We had a really good crowd last year, bigger than the year before. My photos for the last two years are at: http://community.we bshots.com/user/danartley and Mark Poore's at: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com /ph/rauler83/album?.dir=8e0c&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a //pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/rauler83/my_photos Ken Sanford's ride was cold, but really nice, the brats and chili were awesome, the bikes fabulous. My camera's battery died after one photo, so I hope others were taking pictures. I really wanted to record more of the bikes for posterity and wouldn't want to pick out a favorite, but what the heck! Ken's Gillot was so nice! Who'd a thought blue with brown trim, but really pretty.

Here's the stuff for the retro ride:

Saturday Nov 5th at Oregon Ridge Park, Shawan Road exit West off I-83.

- 9 am or so to socialize - ride begins at 10 am

Wear your oldest jersey, bring out your oldest bike. Feel intimidated by not having the latest equipment? The Retro Ride celebrates the old, the creaky, the rusty. Freewheel cogs with so much space between them who knew they could squeeze five more in there? Imagine a bike frame where you have to worry about rust. Watch the guy who nails his cleats to his shoes or has front and rear wheels that are interchangeable. It's all there on the Retro Ride.

Modern bikes are welcome, track or fixed gear are discouraged as the course is not friendly to a single gear.

You can ride as long or short as you want but the general loop is around 35 miles. It is welcome to all speeds but generally is a 15/17 mph.

Directions - from Baltimore I-83 north to Shawan Rd west. At first traffic light turn left (Beaver Dam Rd), go about half a mile to the Oregon Ridge Center parking lot on the right.

Questions? Shawn 410 889 5518 home or shawn.downing@jhu.edu

Hope you can make it.
