On hot sunny days, they shade your head from the sun. On cold windy days, they keep cold air off your head. On hot days, soaked in water, they evaporate and provide a cooling effect. On sunny days, the bill (forward) keeps the sun out of your eyes. On sunny days, the bill (backwards) keeps the sun off your neck. On very hot very sunny days, they hold a kerchief over your neck and shoulders to provide a Bedouin sun shade. On wet days, the bill (forward) keeps some of the rain and mud out of your eyes.
