When we designed the original Trek aluminum frame, we very intentionally set out to replicate the stiffness and ride characteristics of our Columbus steel (model 970) frame. Part of the reason (as I understand, anyway) was that Klein held a patent on the use of oversize aluminum tubing to create a stiffer frame.
