Frank,
I thought Gilco tubing was the same material as SL, except
it was crimped/reshaped for extra stiffness. Perhaps there's
more to the story?
If not, I would expect that - for a given frame size - it
could handle a slightly heavier rider than ordinary SL. Of
course, this assumes that the "crimped" sections were properly
arranged so that their location was in accord with the length
of the butted sections.
Might the crimped sections be moer brittle because they are
cold worked? Even so, I imagine that a Gilco frame with the
correct tubing dimensions would handle a rider up to 250
pounds.
Then again, I weigh about 125 pounds (9 stone/57 kilos) and
I'm short. I.e. I typically ride a 52cm frame. I've never
been on a steel frame that didn't feel sufficiently stiff. So
my projections for heavy riders are probably woefully
inaccurate...
