Pic of the Day 4th October, 2005
The Death of Paul Chocque (Warning - this is a very graphic crash photo.)
(I've started to post this picture a number of times, but never followed through. It's on topic now since we've been discussing stayer racing, a fascinating but deadly sport.)

Parc des Princes, Paris, Sunday, 4th September, 1949. Paul Chocque lies fatally injured on the infield after crashing during a motor-paced event. My poor attempt at translating the text:
"The crash of Paul Chocque to the Park of the Princes. The former
winner of Bordeaux-Paris, who had resumed his trade of stayer, after
having given it up, burst (fell? flatted?) at full speed, Sunday at The
Parc. He fell heavily at the feet from our photographer who immediately
took this picture, while, already, a friend of Chocque started to lift
him. A little before midnight, yesterday evening, Paul Chocque - alas!
- died."
