A good story; you never know who you'll meet out there.

My own brush with fame:

I was working Saturday afternoon in the shop, just about to close when a young guy in racing togs comes in with a trashed wheel. This was mid-late 70s (no later than 1979, probably earlier) in Madison WI, and at that time they held criteriums around the Capitol square on Saturdays. He had been racing the crit and crashed, ruining his wheel. No surprise; it was a nasty course. No sooner were you out of one corner than you were into the next. Lots of potholes, and to top it off, the corners had a negative camber. I said we were just about to close, could he leave the wheel and come back for it? No, he needed it for a race in Milwaukee the next day. So I took pity and told him he could wait while I rebuilt the wheel. We started talking -- he'd been racing for a few years out west, and was in Wisconsin visiting his girlfriend in La Crosse and doing a few of the local races. Seems he was a pretty good rider, with a lot of promise. Finished the wheel, and sent him on his way. His name? Greg Lemond!
