Maassens bike is a Colnago with a superbe pro groupset and downtube levers. Museeuw has ergopower. Suntour had no chance of competing without brake lever gear changing
I believe Suntour did in fact attempt to address this with something called Command Shifters.If memory serves me right they were little more than bar end shifters mounted alongside the brake levers.Obviously they didn't take off and now that I am writing this I suspect that they are O/T for C.R time-line.
