I encountered the chunky ferrule issue from a backwards direction. I needed stiffer cables for my marginaly-on-topic Trek, to improve the feel of the Shimano side-pulls. American Cycles in San Francisco was offerring complete 1.8 mm Modolo cable sets for $5 each, so I bought. Couldn't get the big ferrules to fit the Shimano levers or some Campy on-topic Record levers, so I found some Modolo levers on Ebay. Now have brakes that work and fit.
I did not experience any Modolo housings pulling through conventional ferrules.
The Modolo housings had the chunky ferrule tightly crimped on one end only, with an unferruled, well-finished other end. It fit the Shimano barrell adjusters pretty well. I tried adding Nashbar ferrules to those ends, and I couldn't have added them without somehow thinning the housing jacket. I think that would have been difficult with a low chance of success.
So, I'd look for some Modolo cable sets or at least Modolo housing sets.

I am currently trying to employ some vintage Modolo brake levers using the conventional silver ferrules sold by my LBS. The problem is that the cable housing seems to pull through the ferrule base where the cable exits the lever. I seem to recall that Modolo had their own chunky ferrule. Any suggestions on where these can be obtained or what any other solutions to m y current dilemma? Thanks in advance.........
