Reminds me of my Uncle Arthur, who refused to use headlights after dark because "they wear the battery down."
Imagine tearing around those little country lanes in Cornwall after dark with no lights -- Great America doesn't come close for terror level! After my mom found out, she refused to let him drive me anywhere at any time!
