Subject: [CR]BB spacer question

Hi all,

After 20 years of not rebuilding a bottom bracket (due to 20 years of not riding), I just disassembled my second one in the past 2 weeks.

On this one, unlike the first (or the third, which comes next week), there are TWO shims between the fixed cup and the frame. I assume the thin one is a standard "washer" but the other one is 2-3mm (about 1/16") thick and is apparently there to shift the spindle to the right (chain side).

Other than clearance (chainring-to-chainstay), is there any reason for such a spacer?

TIA,
...Derek Davis, Phoenix
