My Gitane tandem also has a curved seat tube and came with the drive crank on the captain's BB, but I changed it shortly after buying it (over 20 years ago) to a more conventional setup. The FD has no problems on my bike at least:

The Gitane came with an idler wheel on the boob tube to help prevent this, but it still managed to bounce out more than a few times before I changed the crank arrangement. I'm now using the idler wheel mounting plate to hold a cable hanger for the front derailleur cable housing.
