A lot of hubs came with solid axles. Many wing nut companies made an extended RH wingnut to clear the derailleur. Simplex was very narrow on top so the standard Huret fit just fine. Would have sold you some cheap. We often took the wings and bent them out. When lucky they moved nicely, no cracking, and cleared. When cantankerous, they broke off. GRRRR. I probably have some extended RH and matching LH pairs if it's of interest. Many threads varied slightly among the super standard highly organized metric system the Europeans raved about and tried to lord over us in those early post war years. It took them a while to improve a little. These wingnuts are older, and we often had to tap them to screw onto the axles easier. The brass type threads didn't mind and the wingnuts fit that axle perfectly, forever. Ted Ernst Palos Verdes Estates, CA
