thanks to the suggestion of a couple of list members, i went looking for colbalto replacement stones at my local arts and crafts store. i found some plastic "stones" that while not identical to the originals, are a pretty good substitute. the diameter is so right, they actually snap in, but of course you should glue them anyway. the real difference is that these are not round and smooth, but rather "cut" like a precious stone (facet cut?). you can see pics at:
