I'm surprised this subject isn't generating more discussion. I learned the hard way how important relacing protocol can be. In the early 80's I relaced my first ever Campy hubs ( low flange). This was the second time they were laced and with Campy's legendary durability I never gave it a thought. Not many miles later, I was cleaning the hubs and noticed cracks at several spoke holes. I returned them to Campy USA and was soon advised that the cracks occurred because I had relaced the spokes in the opposite direction from the first lacing. Apparently the spoke tension extrudes the spoke hole and relacing in the opposite direction applies tension to a weakened area. Unless there are sharp burrs the spoke hole distortion is best left alone. The critical issue is determining which way the hub was previously laced and repeating it.
