Peter & Tom, This is only partially correct. Prior to the Second World War a lot of time triallist and record breakers raced with a short front spearpoint mudguard fitted. Full mudguards were still quite common in 12 and 24 hour time trials and in long distance record breaking attempts even in the 1960's. Just examine the pictures Reg Randall LE-JoG & 1000 full guards, Ken Joy shorties, Albert & Crimes full front. It is true that a lot of riders rode to events with guards fitted and then removed them for racing, Bates had the special wing nut quick release fitted on most of their frames for this very purpose. I am 58 in January and when I time trialed on my trike even in the 70's a lot of the older TT trike riders still had a short front guard fitted for racing.
