There is a photograph of my brother time trialing on his Pollard in the
early 50s at

n_Pollard , complete with front shorty. He tells me that if there
seemed any prospect of rain at all he would fit a front shorty (known to
him as an extension), which was just enough to protect his face from
anything flicked up from the front wheel. I am also researching the
Thanet Road Club rider Stan Clements, whose name appears on the top tube
of a Hurlow I bought recently, and today received some superb
photographs of him. One of them shows him competing in a 12 hour event
in 1956, setting a club record of 237.122 miles, and his machine also is
equipped with a front shorty. So, I think the answer to the question of
whether or not they were used is that some did, some of the time, and
some didn't.
