Eric,
As has already been mentioned, Monthlery is a mis-print and
Montlhery is a town, located a bit to the south of Paris, which
had an auto racing circuit. This was a "speedway" style track
with banked turns in the manner of Monza, Brooklands or the
Indiannapolis Motor Speedway. In addition to the cycling's
1933 World Road Championships, several high speed, motor paced
records were set there. The circuit also included a road
section that lead into the countryside, which is probably why
the cycling World's were held there.
I _think_ that one of Aldo Ross's photos was of a bicycle
race at the circuit. I can't recall whether this photo showed
the racers on the autodrome or if there was also a proper
velodrome on the property. Anyway, the name "Montlhery" became
a sort of by-word for speedy racing, sort of like Ballila in
Italy.
I saw a portion of the circuit in 1983 and it's condition
was not good even though I think they were still running the
occasional auto race there. It closed for good last year and
will probably become some sort of housing development. C'est
triste.
How common are the rims with the mis-spelling on the label?
Could they be considered more valuable, like a misprinted
stamp?
Cheers,
Fred Rednor - Arlington, Virginia (and please
feel free to correct any of my errors)
