the size and shape just seems to me to mesh almost exactly with period "gonfleurs" or CO2 inflators of the era - and i dunno about bobet, but id *much* rather carry my personal little pick-me-up in a nice ta ref:300 flask in a jersey pocket, than have it down below my bottom bracket, collecting every manner of nasty road grime...
theres a rebour drawing of koblets bike from that tdf with a "gonfleur" of very similar shape and size in an issue of "le cycliste" at home - ill try to scan it in this evening before poker night starts.
