OK, so maybe it's time for me to chime in here. Back in the late-80s I was talking to the folks at SunTour about these things. Their response was that these were developed for tandem use originally. The reason was the design could wrap a whole lot of chain thus eliminating the saggy chain syndrome you had back in the day with wide-range triples.
