My experience is that there are two qualities that affect tubular tire durability: the quality of the tire itself, and the weight of the rider. Back when I weighed 130#, I used tubulars exclusively and seldom had problems at all -- I'd wear the tires out before they'd flat. As I've accumulated mass over the years (now at 155# and holding, I think) I've had more problems with flatting. If I could get back down to 130# I'd seriously consider going back to tubulars only.
