++++++++++ For stock Hi-E hubs, you must remove the spokes to pull the flanges that hold the bearings. For Phil, this is not necessary, and I have successfully done bearing replacements with "improvised" tools. However, it is highly recommended that a proper hydraulic press and jig be used (which, alas, I no longer can get access to). On the Phil, when the bearing is shot, I have been known to use brute force and an expanding tool to push out the bearing from the opposite side, this usually carries the (outer) axle cap with it. It is rumored that lubrication with ethanol helps the mechanic, if not the bearing. Unfortunately, the null experiment (no alcohol) has not been observed and is not believed to exist in nature. :-)
