There's an older gentleman in my neighborhood who still rides his Colnago Arabesque each day, but with a few modifications: Old school (bear trap) mountain bike pedals, mtn bike bars and brake levers, rear mounted bike rack with wire basket, detachable handlebar mounted wire basket, and a length of boat anchor chain wrapped around the seatpost, with a massive dangling padlock leaving innumerable dents in the pearlescent ivory frame. He is knowledgeable about bikes and dearly loves that old Colnago, which was his last purchase in a long line of quality race bikes. I smile and wave each time I see him; I can only hope to be as fortunate when I'm his age.
