Adam; I've not used bees wax, but Peter Koskinen of the CR & who has built many sets of wheels recommends linseed oil. Linseed oil is readily available at any art supply store and possibly your local hardware store. To quote Peter below:
"FYI: I don't use spoke prep when I build wheels, I use Boiled Linseed Oil. Spoke Prep from Wheelsmith costs a lot of money and lasts about 6 months if you build a lot of wheels. Boiled Linseed Oil is available everywhere, costs a few $$, and has a multitude of uses, lasts for years, and when used with spokes it dries out in a couple of days locking the spokes in place so they won't loosen under load".
