Perhaps people who walked into a Schwinn dealer and asked for the best- most expensive- bike wound up buying them. Imagine how someone unfamiliar with racing bikes might react to their first flat sew up. I can just about hear such a person upon hearing the drill for fixing a flat say, "screw that" and park the bike in the back of the garage forever.
